Household Hazardous Waste Collection Dates

Remember: Highlands East residents may attend any of the Household Hazardous Waste Collection events held in Haliburton County and select events held in Faraday. Be sure to bring your landfill disposal card with you to these events. Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) is found in every home and includes batteries, cleaners, paints, motor oil, chemicals, grease, and fluorescent tubes.

If not disposed of safely and properly, HHW can be harmful to people, animals and our local environment. HHW must not be included in your household garbage, recycling or poured down the drain.

What can I bring to Household Hazardous Waste events?

  • Aerosol Cans (full or partially full)
  • Automotive Fluids (brake fluid, antifreeze, etc.)
  • Batteries, Vehicle (automotive, marine, etc.)
  • Batteries, Household (rechargeable or single-use)
  • Cleaners (bleach, oven cleaner, disinfectants, drain declogger, etc.)
  • Fertilizers
  • Finishing Products (varnish, glue, metal polish, floor and furniture polish, car wax, etc.)
  • Gasoline (containers will not be returned)
  • Motor Oil (must be capped)
  • Paint (do not mix latex and oil based paints)
  • Pesticides, Fungicides, Herbicides, Insecticides
  • Pool Chemicals
  • Propane Cylinders and Tanks
  • Solvents (varsol, paint thinners, etc.)
  • Light Tubes and Bulbs

Items that are not accepted include:

  • Fireworks
  • Ammunition
  • Sharps (needles, syringes, lancets)
  • PCBs
  • Radioactive Waste
  • Pathological Waste
  • Waste from Small Businesses
  • Helium or Freon

Where I can I bring paint? 

Paint can be dropped off at the Haliburton Home Hardware and Minden Home Hardware to be recycled, for free. They will accept any brand of latex or oil-based paint during regular operating hours. Quantity limits may apply. This take-back program is operated by producer responsibility organization, Product Care Recycling.

Paint can also be brought to any of the Household Hazardous Waste Collections throughout the County.
