Full-Time General Equipment Operator Position Available

The Municipality of Highlands East is currently seeking a full-time, general equipment operator to work 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday in the Public Works Department with a $26.35 rate of pay.

Position Details

Reporting to the Operations Supervisor, the successful candidate will be responsible for operating trucks and other heavy equipment in the construction and maintenance of roads and bridges in the Municipality’s road system. They will provide a variety of construction, snow/ice removal, maintenance and repair services to municipal roads and equipment.

Primary function

Operate trucks and other heavy equipment in the construction and maintenance of roads and bridges in the Municipality’s road system. Provide a variety of construction, snow/ice removal, maintenance and repair services to municipal roads and equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform variety of duties as instructed by Roads Superintendent or Lead Hand.
  • Operate various pieces of heavy equipment, including truck, bulldozer, backhoe and loader to perform road maintenance (loose top and hard top); winter control (snow/ice removal using snowplow, truck and sander); and roadside maintenance including pick up/hauling materials, cover landfill, repair culverts, remove trees and debris from roads, and clear beaver dams.
  • Operate backhoe to dig trenches and excavate for water mains, repair fire hydrants and load trucks.
  • Operate street cleaning equipment such as street sweepers or other vehicles equipped with rotating brushes to remove sand, litter and trash.
  • Operate chainsaws and other clearing equipment to fell trees and cut back vegetation close to roads and power lines.
  • Check, lubricate, refuel and clean equipment and report any malfunctions to Operations Supervisor.
  • Drive truck to haul materials such as gravel, sand and rocks.
  • Excavate and/or backfill road bases.
  • Assist with repair of sanitary sewers, catch basins, storm sewers, fire hydrants and roads.
  • Perform manual labour using various tools (i.e. shovel, rake, hand tools) to maintain roadside.
  • Perform minor maintenance (including preventative) tasks, related to vehicles and equipment (i.e. greasing, oiling, changing light bulbs, etc.)
  • Respond to emergency callouts and operate equipment to ensure that the road system and public places are repaired and maintained in a clean safe and useable manner
  • May perform mechanical and welding repairs and general shop maintenance. 
  • May perform other duties as assigned.

Skills

  • Knowledge and ability to operate a variety of heavy equipment, including dump trucks, loaders, etc. in a safe manner over a variety of terrain, road conditions, and weather.
  • Knowledge and skill at building and maintaining municipal roads through using appropriate construction equipment.
  • Experience in safely and professionally operating equipment.
  • Ability to perform all job functions required in a safe manner to avoid personal injury, injury of others, and equipment and property damage.
  • Ability to maintain attention to detail.
  • Good oral communication skills
  • Establish and maintain respectful and effective working relationships with others.

Education

  • Grade 12 education, or equivalent;
  • A valid AZ or DZ Driver’s License;
  • Course work in welding would be considered an asset;
  • Chainsaw license would be considered an asset.

Experience

2 to 3 years experience in the operation of heavy equipment used by the Municipality.

Working Conditions

  • Approximately 5% will be spent in an office environment organizing and preparing tasks and other paperwork as assigned by the Operations Supervisor.
  • Approximately 95% will be spent outside of the office during normal working hours.
  • Operates a variety of heavy equipment, including dump trucks, loaders, etc., and is exposed to a variety of weather and road conditions that require the position to be fit for work and to operate in a safe manner for self and others.
  • May be exposed to severe weather conditions.
  • Physical requirements include:
    • Sitting for long periods of time with occasional standing, walking and bending.
    • Occasional lifting of up to 100 pounds with assistance.
    • Getting in and out of cab of vehicle.
  • Proper PPE is provided and must be worn at all times.
  • Normal working hours are 40 hours per week. Some alternating evening and/or weekend work may be required. This position requires the individual to be on call 24/7, available in all weather conditions, and work frequently with heavy equipment, hazardous products, and around other utilities (hydro, water, wastewater, gas, telecommunications, etc.).

Position Requirements

  • 2 to 3 years experience in the operation of heavy equipment used by the Municipality;
  • Grade 12 education, or equivalent;
  • A valid AZ or DZ Driver’s License;
  • Course work in welding would be considered an asset;
  • Chainsaw license would be considered an asset.
