Family Day Movies in the Highlands
Movies in the Highlands presents two Family Day movie screenings with refreshments, a raffle and made available to everyone free, with an optional donation.
Date: Monday, February 20, 2012
Showtimes: Afternoon film program starts at 2:00pm and evening film program starts at 6:00pm
Place: Lloyd Watson Community Center. (future screenings planned for different community centers, monthly)
Afternoon Film Program consists of six short films and lasts for a total of 81 minutes, ending at roughly 3:30pm with a raffle:
- What on Earth – This Oscar nominated animated short proposes what many earthlings have long feared; that the automobile has inherited the planet. (10 minutes)
- My Grandmother Ironed the King's Shirts – Another Oscar nominated gem with a bit of history told humorously. (10 minutes)
- Louise – A charming tale of a 96 year old that still lives on her own as you follow her for a day. (10 minutes)
- The Dingles – A delightful tale about Doris and her three cats that survive an adventure. (8 minutes)
- The Sweater – Roch Carrier's classic tale about a mix up of hockey sweaters. (11 minutes)
- Paddle to the Sea – Bill Mason’s classic, Oscar nominated, nature masterpiece. (30 minutes)
Evening Film Program features the movie Waterwalker and lasts for a total of 88 minutes, ending at roughly 7:30pm
- Waterwalker – "When Bill Mason went on canoe trips to make documentaries, he produced poetry and magic. Even if you're landlocked, see [his films] for their beauty and enriching experience." – Toronto Star. (88 minutes)

Figure Skating Lessons
The Highlands East Recreational Figure Skating Club is now offerring lessons on Tuesday nights at 6:30PM. Cost is $120 for the first child and $100 per each additional child.

Reserve your table for Dinner at the Diner, a Halloween Geocaching Event
Make your reservations for dinner at the South Algonquin Diner on Saturday, October 29th at 6:30PM and take part in a fun and action packed geocaching event in Wilberforce. Part treasure hunt, part theatre and all fun for the whole family.
Swim Races this weekend at the Cardiff Pool
Swim Races will be taking place at the Cardiff Pool at 2 Balsam Street this Sunday, August 28, 2011. Races begin at 12:00PM and pizza will be served afterwards to the participants.
A $2.00 entry fee applies to enter the pool for the races (and is good for the rest of the day).

Doors Open comes to Highlands East in June
Celebrate the heritage of Cardiff, Highland Grove, Wilberforce, Tory Hill and Gooderham! Join us in learning and celebrating the rich and interesting heritage of Highlands East on June 11th and 12th.
Doors Open originated in France in 1984 and began sweeping through Ontario in 2000 and gives us the opportunity to glimpse into our past -- to step into a different time, another world, a foreign place. It engages people from all backgrounds capturing the hearts and minds of architecture enthusiasts, environmentalists, photographers and day trippers as well as those interested in the culinary arts, genealogy and rural tourism.
Highlands East is proud to be one of the 56 communities participating in the 10th Anniversary of Doors Open. Come and explore the hamlets Cardiff, Highland Grove, Wilberforce, Tory Hill, Essonville and Gooderham. We have places of interest for everyone!

- Visit Haliburton County’s National Historic Site, the Red Cross Outpost Museum in Wilberforce, home to the first Red Cross Outpost in Canada.

Day Trip: Wildcat Trail & Glamor Lake Park
Perfect for the ATV enthusiast!
Park at the Tory Hill Community Park and head west on Highway 118 to Gibson Road. Turn left and follow Gibson Road until the very end. It turns into Wildcat Trail and it is a great ride with spectacular scenery. A little challenging in spots, but worth the ride.
You’ll come out at Glamor Lake Road. Turn right and you will end up at a fabulous park between Big and Little Glamor Lakes; Ideal for a picnic or a dip.
Head back down Glamor Lake Road and you will end up on Highway 503, where you can turn right to Gooderham and have lunch at Donna’s Diner or you can turn left and catch the IB&O Rail Trail right back to the Tory Hill Community Park. You don’t require a trail permit to ride this trail, as the Municipality of Highlands East owns the Rail Trail within its boundaries.
