Notice of Open Houses to discuss proposed Official Plan Update
All citizens with an interest in land use planning in the Municipality of Highlands East are invited to attend an open house to obtain information on the new Official Plan for the Municipality. The current Official Plan was approved on December 7, 2004 and Provincial legislation requires municipalities to review and update their Official Plan every 5 years to consider local planning issues as well as to ensure consistency with Provincial policy.
This open house will follow an informal workshop format with a overview presentation and an opportunity for citizens and stakeholders to discuss planning issues and community values.

Afternoon Open House:
Monday, August 30, 2010 at 2:00pm - 4:00pm at the Robert McCausland Memorial Community Centre, GooderhamEvening Open House:
Monday, August 30, 2010 at 6:00pm - 8:00pm at the Lloyd Watson Community Centre, Wilberforce

2010 Tariff of Fees By-law
The Council for the Municipality of Highlands East proposes to enact a by-law to prescribe a tariff of comprehensive fees and charges relating to the processing of applications made in respect to planning matters, at the regular Council meeting held on July 13, 2010. The Council meeting commences at 9:00 a.m. and will be held at the Council Chambers in Wilberforce, Ontario.

O.P.P. Community Mobilization Forum to be held March 30, 2010
The Haliburton Highlands Detachment, along with the Municipality of Highlands East will be hosting a Community Mobilization Forum on Tuesday March 30, 2010 at 7:00pm. The forum will take place at the Lloyd Watson Centre in Wilberforce.
The forum will focus on current Drug and Break and Enter trends in the eastern portion of Haliburton County. Members of the public are invited to attend this free forum. Officers from the Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau-Drug Enforcement Section, the O.P.P. Rural Agricultural Crime Team (R.A.C.T.) and Crime Stoppers will be presenting at the forum.
This is a great opportunity for members of the public to learn about local Drug and Break and Enter trends, learn how they affect you and your family and what you can do to assist the police in keeping your community safer.

Support the CURE Breast Cancer Foundation's National Denim Day
The CURE Breast Cancer Foundation has requested council's support of National Denim Day, May 11, 2010. CURE is a national foundation that provides funding for basic and clinical research of breast cancer. The foundation supports researchers, laboratories and the purchase of equipment that can help realize these goals.
In response to the request from CURE, Council, at the regular meeting held on March 9, 2010 passed the following resolution:
BE IT RESOLVED THAT Council supports National Denim Day, Tuesday, May 11, 2010 and further encourages and permits all municipal employees to wear denim and receive CURE's “Pink Flower” in exchange for a suggested $5.00 donation to the CURE foundation.

Tender for Re-shingling of Sand Dome
Sealed tenders, clearly marked “Re-shingling of Sand Dome” will be received by the undersigned up until August 6, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. for the removal and re-shingling of the sand dome located on Hwy 118, Municipality of Highlands East. Specifications can be picked up at the Municipal Office in Wilberforce or faxed between the hours of 9:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Work to be completed in the month of September 2009.

Ward 4 Landfill Site
A one day, four hour Household Hazardous Waste Event at the Ward 4 Landfill Site, 19178 Highway 118 between Wilberforce and Tory Hill.

A one day, three hour Household Hazardous Waste Event at the Ward 3 Transfer Station, 1067 McColl’s Road in Gooderham.

Earth Hour Event
Council for the Municipality of Highlands East passed the following resolution at the February 10, 2009 council meeting:
“BE IT RESOLVED THAT Council for the Municipality of Highlands East supports the Earth Hour event on Saturday, March 28th, 2009 from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and requests that all residents in Highlands East “switch their lights off” from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on March 28th, 2009.
AND FURTHER THAT Council supports Energy Conservation Week from May 17 – 23, 2009 and requests that all residents of Highlands East participate by conserving and reducing energy consumption”.
